The Billion Tree Campaign

Het milieuprogramma van de VN (UNEP) heeft een wereldwijde camnpagne gestrat om zoveel mogelijk bomen te planten.
Onder de titel’Plant for the Planet’: Billion Tree Campaign, worden mensen, oorganisaties, bedrijven, locale gemeenschappen enz. aangemoedigd om bomen te planten – met het doel om wereldwijd ieder jaar een miljard (is in het Engels billion!) bomen te planten
Met het doel om de actie te versnellen wil UNEP zelfs 7 milliard bomen geplant hebben voor het eind van 2009. Daarbij moeten zoveel mogelijk inheemse soorten worden aangeplant op plekken waar ze zich ’thuisvoelen’.
Op initiatief van Wangari Maathai (Nobelpijswinnares voor de Vrede) en Prins Albert van Monaco zal de campagne wereldwijd gevoerd worden.

Agroforestry: combinatie van bos-en landbouw
Bomen spelen een grote rol in bijna alle ecosystemen op het land – en leveren een groot aantal producten voor iedereen: van hout tot allerlei vruchten.
Wanneer land wordt ontgonnen voor landbouw kan het voordeel van bossen het best behouden blijven door bosbouw en landbouw te integreren: agroforestry, oftewel boslandbouw, meestal rijen bomen tussen de gewassen. Traditionele landbouw werkte al vaak met dit systeem, maar in de moderne landbouw is het vaak verlaten. Het kan wel eens de beste manier zijn om landbouw duurzaam te maken
Prof. Wangari Maathai, stichtster van de Green Belt Movement in Kenia en winnaar van de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede in 2004 zegt:
